TECH SHEET 46 - JACOBS IRON MAINTENANCE
To : Jacobs' Iron Users
Subject: Proper Care of Jacobs' Shoe and Iron
Congratulations on your purchase of the Jacobs' Shoe. The restoration trades have a longstanding appreciation of its unique, effective design. Proper care of your Jacobs' Shoe and Iron will bring continuous professional results.
The shoe has no moving parts. It is individually cast and machined to surround the heater element. Heat output is controlled by a magnestat control pellet (#5, #6, or #7) pressed into a tip surrounded by the heater. This assures an efficient, homogenous heat transfer from element to the shoe casting. The consistent and known shoe temperature is the key to high skill repairs.
Soiled shoes hinder this performance. Use 240 grit wet/dry sandpaper to gently sand the shoe surfaces to a new finish whenever required. NEVER USE A WIRE BRUSH WHEEL.
To change shoes, use penetrating oil to free the shoe before you unscrew it from the shaft. Do not force the shoe free by using gripping tools. May we suggest a second iron to avoid costly down time.
