TECH SHEET 45 - GLISTER PEARL AND GLISTER GOLD

To: Vinyl Repair Professionals
Subject: The Pearlescent Touch

Late model cars, both foreign and domestic, occasionally include pearlescent pigments in vinyl upholstery, trim, and roofs. You will commonly find it in Vinyl Flooring, a lucrative market for repair work using B-2 Compound and Topcoat. When you do find that pearlescent look, in the majority of cases it can be duplicated with Glister Pearl. The purpose of this tech sheet is to show you how you can use the Glister pearlescents to your advantage.

Today as in years past, the silver metallic appearance may not be the result of aluminum flake. For instance, Glister Pearl, in a diluted gray lacquer or waterborne, can produce a shimmering bright silver appearance that changes as you view it from different angles. In recoloring for example, Glister Pearl alone, with no color added, in a clear topcoat sprayed over a black substrate, produces a similar effect: a bright silver finish.

Whenever a gold brassy effect is needed, though less common, use Glister Gold. Add just a hint Orange or Brite Yellow Intermix to your clear topcoat.

INCLUDE THE GLISTERS IN YOUR COLORMATCH

Whenever you can match a color with all or mostly transparent Color Intermix, then you can add Glister direct to the colormatch. The best way is to add the Glister early on in the colormatch as you progress toward the perfect match. You can always add a bit more as you add more pigments. The opposite applies for an opaque color match. In that case, add the Glisters to the last or clear coat application. The amount to add will depend on the surface color you are matching. Treat it like a pigment, which it is. For spot coloring, add from the tip of your pallet knife and shake it in. For larger quantities of waterborne you should sift in while stirring to rule out the possibility of agglomerates clogging your spray equipment.

ANOTHER TRICK

Any color mixture that includes Glister can also bear a higher level of clear HIBASE without diminishing hiding power. Glister provides hiding power to some extent.
